About Anna Maria Island

Anna Maria Island is a seven-mile-long barrier island that serves as a sanctuary of 'Old Florida' charm, resisting the high-rise development that has transformed many other coastal areas. Geologically, the island is part of the barrier island chain protecting the entrance to Tampa Bay. Its shores are characterized by fine-grained white sand, predominantly quartz-based but with a higher concentration of tiny shell fragments compared to Siesta Key, giving the beach a slightly more natural and varied texture. The island's geography is dynamic, with the northern tip, known as Bean Point, constantly shifting as the currents from the Gulf and Tampa Bay collide. This creates unique sandbar formations and relatively shallow, clear waters that are ideal for wading.nnThe history of Anna Maria Island is deeply rooted in pioneer grit. While utilized by indigenous Calusa and Timucua people for centuries, the first permanent European settler was George Emerson Bean, who established a homestead on the north end in 1893. His son, Will Bean, continued the development, and in 1911, a 1,000-foot pier was built to accommodate steamships bringing tourists from the mainland. This pier, known today as the City Pier, remains a central historical landmark. The island's development was slow and intentional, with residents consistently voting to maintain strict building height restrictions. This has preserved the island's unique vibe—a colorful, cottage-filled landscape where bicycles and golf carts are the primary modes of transport. The atmosphere is laid-back, artistic, and community-oriented, with a focus on simple pleasures like watching the sunset and frequenting locally-owned bakeries.
